Crusaders Win Big on Opening Day

Crusaders Win Big on Opening Day
AURBURNDALE, Fla. – The Capital University baseball team defeated Brandeis University, 18-6, in its season opener on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Logan Bastin and senior Christian Ross each had three-hit days to pace a Crusaders offense that smacked 20 hits in one nine-inning game.

A big seven-run fourth inning helped propel Capital (1-0) to victory number one of the season. Justin Ennis (Vista, Calif.) broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the fourth with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Ross from third. Bastin followed with an RBI single. The lead continued to balloon when Matthew Carnahan (Moundsville, W.Va.)  hit one of his two triples, scoring one more run. When the lineup turned over Ross came back up to the plate and knocked in two more runs with Capital's second triple of the inning.

Capital held on to its seven-run lead and allowed just one run the rest of the way. The combination of Jacob Sheaf (Cincinnati, Ohio), Luke Veldman (Tipp City, Ohio), and Benjamin Ginsberg (Flagstaff, Ariz.) kept the Judges off of the board for the last four innings and just one run from the fourth inning on.

Sheaf (W, 1-0) earned the win while striking out two and inducing seven ground outs in three innings of work. Veldman allowed three hits in his three innings on the bump, while Ginsberg cleaned up the final frame.

Bastin went 3-for-5, all hits going for singles, and knocked in three RBIs.

Ross also had three hits, but also scored twice and recorded four RBIs on the day. He and Carnahan both hit two triples in their season debuts.

Capital will continue its play at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational with a doubleheader against Alma College on Sunday. They will play two seven-inning contests beginning at 11:30 a.m. The games will be played at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla.
