AUSTINTOWN, Ohio – In the first wave of spring sport weekly awards, Capital University's Shane Wellman was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week.
While Wellman, a Moundsville, W.Va. native, only had one start during the Crusaders' trip to the Sunshine State, it was the team's most dominant pitching performance of the week. In game two of a doubleheader against Alma College (Mich.), the sophomore righty went seven innings and surrendered just two hits and an unearned run while obtaining a no-decision.
Wellman set new career highs with the longest outing of his collegiate career and tripled his previous career best in strikeouts with nine. He also had three assists in the field. The lone run he allowed was an unearned run. He left the game deadlocked at 1-1 but the Scots came back to win in extra innings, 4-3.
Capital will play its next game this Sunday, March 8 against Hanover College in Westfield, Ind. The game will be played at Grand Park.
