Jason Sturgill completed his first year as a volunteer assistant baseball coach and brings with him more than 25 years of experience as a baseball coach at multiple levels of youth and high school ball. Sturgill is the owner of Sturgill Performance where he works with athletes of all ages to hone mental toughness, coach strength, speed and agility training, teach sports nutrition and serve as an independent pitching, hitting and fielding coach.
In his first year with the program in 2019, first baseman Shayne Lyons was named Second Team All-OAC and second baseman Beau Otto earned an All-OAC Honorable Mention nod. Three players, Kyle Armbrecht, Joe Caporale and Ryan Henne, were named Academic All-OAC.
Sturgill graduated from Morehead State University with a degree in Exercise Science in 1999 before joining the United States Army as an exercise instructor and platoon sergeant. In the Army, Sturgill supported Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2002 and 2004 before leaving the service in 2006. He also holds a Masters of Science in Sports Management with an emphasis in sports Administration from American Military University (2015) and a Masters of Education with an emphasis in athletic coaching from Northcentral University (2018).
Sturgill served as the head strength and conditioning coach at Granville High School and as the assistant head coach and pitching coach of the junior varsity team at Granville in 2016-17 and is currently a lecturer in the Sport, Fitness and Health Program at The Ohio State University. Sturgill is also an OHSAA-certified baseball umpire and has had 22 former players play collegiate baseball.
