ALLIANCE Ohio - The Capital University men's lacrosse team fell 9-1 at Mount Union on Saturday in the varsity program's first-ever Ohio Athletic Conference matchup.
After surrendering three straight unanswered goals to the Purple Raiders to begin the first quarter of play, freshman midfielder Michael Trefethern (Canfield, Ohio) got the Crusaders on the board with an unassisted score at the 10:46 mark of the second frame.
Mount Union then managed to record three additional goals before halftime, as they took a 6-1 lead at the break.
At halftime, the Crusaders were being outshot 14-3, while the Purple Raiders also held a 5-2 faceoff advantage.
As the second half of play unfolded, the Crusaders allowed just two goals over the remaining two quarters of the game, but failed to ink the scoreboard with any scores of their own the final 30 minutes of action.
In total, the Crusaders unloaded 14 shots, while forcing the Purple Raiders into 11 turnovers for the game. Capital limited Mount Union just three goals in the second half.
Leading the way offensively for the Crusaders was Trefethern, who scored the lone goal of the contest. Fellow freshman in goalie Jordan Adkins (Lubbock, Tx.) saved 13 shots for the game in net for Capital.
With the loss, Capital (7-3 overall, 0-1 OAC) is scheduled for its next game this coming Wednesday at Wilmington. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m. in Wilmington, Ohio.
