COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University men's lacrosse team got back on track with its 21-4 victory at home over the Muskingum Fighting Muskies on Wednesday night. One team record fell as part of the team's offensive onslaught while two player recorded hat tricks, and more.
Capital set a new team record for shots taken in a game, recording 76 against the Muskies on Wednesday night. The previous high was 71 set in 2016 and marks the third time in the program's history they recorded 70 or more shot in a single game.
The combination of C.J. Hughes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) and Brennan O'Callaghan (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) accounted for 11 of Capital's 21 goals scored in the game. Hughes set a new career high with six lamp lighters while O'Callaghan posted five goals. The duo also accounted for each of the team's first five goals through the 7:20 mark of the first quarter.
Junior Teddy Crites added a goal less than one minute after Hughes' third goal to give Capital a 6-0 lead. Muskingum scored just once in the opening frame.
Three of O'Callaghan's five goals came in the second quarter and were three of Capital's first four in the stanza. Sophomore Ryan Rampi (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) recorded his third assist of the game on the middle of those O'Callaghan goals to increase the lead to 9-1.
Long stickman Nick Bonsignore (Auburn Township, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) got in on the scoring action when freshman Tyler Faig won a faceoff and flipped it into the open field. Bonsignore scooped it up and all in one motion ripped a shot toward the cage to give Cap an 11-2 lead heading into halftime.
Muskingum scored the first goal of the second half, but the Purple and White responded with nine straight scores before the Muskies would alter the scoreboard again. Bonsignore scored a second time while Hughes tallied three more goals, including one assisted by defenseman Tate Stover (Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy).
Jordan Gush had a solid fourth quarter with two goals and one assist in the frame. Freshman Talbott Gottwals posted two points, one goal and one assist, in the fourth quarter, as well.
