WOOSTER, Ohio – The Capital University men's soccer team was in action Wednesday afternoon as they took on the Fighting Scots of The College of Wooster. The Crusaders extended their winning streak to six games, as Chewy Gordon scores in the Capital win 1-0.
Sophomore Chewy Gordon (Westerville, Ohio/ Westerville Central) was pressuring the defender with the ball. The Wooster defender then sent the ball towards his keeper, who missed the pass. Gordon was able to beat the keeper to the ball and placed it into the back of the net. Capital took a 1-0 lead and Gordon scored his first goal of the season.
In the first half, Capital outshot the Fighting Scots 7-4. Cap also produced five corner kicks. The Crusaders defense was strong again holding Wooster to zero corner kicks, limiting the Fighting Scots' shots on goal to only two. Junior Justin Niswonger (Centerville, Ohio) made both of those saves, keeping the score tied 0-0 heading into halftime.
Cap was on the offensive in the second half, taking 10 shots to Wooster's 2. Capital produced five more corner kicks in the second half, 7-2.
Gordon and senior Cheyn Roux (Davidson, N.C.) led the Capital attack with four shots each. Freshman Trevor Collins (Powell, Ohio/ Olentangy Liberty) finished with two shots. Seven other Crusaders had one shot each.
Niswonger finished the game with three saves and earned his fifth win of the season. He improves to 5-0 on the season with three shutouts.
With the victory, the Crusaders winning streak is now at six games. This streak is the longest winning streak in the last six seasons. Capital is now 6-1 on the season and return to action on Saturday, Sept. 24. Cap will travel to Crestview Hills, Ky. as they battle the Saints of Thomas More College. The match is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
