TIFFIN, Ohio – With only one game remaining in the regular season, Capital University Men's Soccer (10-6-1, 4-3-1 OAC) picked up a vital win on Wednesday, a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Heidelberg University (10-4-1, 3-4-1 OAC).
With the game tied at two, forward Trevor Collins (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) entered the game in the 67th minute. Two minutes after he came on, Collins scored the game-winning goal off a cross from Daniel Bundschuh (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills). The goal was Collins' first of the year and it could not have come at a better time for the Crusaders.
With the win, Capital is now in sixth place in the Ohio Athletic Conference and the Crusaders came into the match tied with Heidelberg. Ohio Northern University is 4-3-0 in conference and the University of Mount Union is 4-2-1. Marietta College is also 4-3-1 after losing to Otterbein University on Wednesday. Mount Union and ONU each play later tonight.
The game got off to a fast start with each side scoring in the first five minutes. The Student Princes put their goal on the scoreboard first on a strike from Gaerid Littler, his first of the season. Just a few minutes later, Bundschuh scored the equalizer off a cross from Tristan Bentley Cincinnati, Ohio/Archbishop McNicholas).
Both sides traded shots for the remainder of the first half and in the 40th minute, Heidelberg took the lead. Heidelberg's Alexis Mendoza sent a cross into the box that connected with the head of Alex Aviles and the Student Princes were up 2-1.
In the second half, the Crusaders received a gift from the Student Princes in the form of a game-tying own goal in the 58th minute. Each side traded a shot until Collins scored the game-winner.
The Crusaders were outshot 15-7 but only had one less shot on goal. Capital goalkeeper Justin Niswonger (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) made four saves, three of which came in the first half.
The Crusaders will travel to Baldwin Wallace University on Saturday, Oct. 28 for their final regular season match. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
