TWINSBURG, Ohio – Despite a breezy, cold but clear morning, the Capital University men's cross country team took the course at the Liberty Park Recreation Area to compete in the 2019 Ohio Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday, November 2. Capital placed eighth out of 10 teams, powered by its core of freshman harriers.

Freshman Alexander Hansel (Willoughby Hills, Ohio/Lake Catholic) was the first Crusader to cross the finish line and score for Capital. Hansel fell short of his personal best but still put in a respectable 6,000-meter time of 27:29.8 to place 40th overall.

Three more freshmen finished between 45th and 60th place, two inside the top-50. Tyler Gunderson clocked a time of 27:45.2 to place 47th, while teammate Maxwell Zawatsky set a new PR with a time of 27:47.4, which round out the top 50 finishers.

Also scoring for Capital was freshman Zach Brown (28:00, 58th) and Grant Ward (29:16.4, 97th). Christian Vermillion (29:35.3), Trenton Thompson (30:21.2), Daniel McPherson (31:41.5), and Andy Fullmer (32:47.1) also competed for Capital but were outside of the scoring five for Cap.

Otterbein University took home the team title after logging just 41 points, edging John Carroll University (44) for the trophy. Otterbein also housed the individual champion, Chase Hampton, who finished the 6k race in 25:29.9.

The Crusaders will rest up for the Great Lakes Regional Championship, which will be hosted at Calvin College (Mich.) on Saturday, November 16.
