BEREA, Ohio – The Capital University softball team took two losses on its road trip to Berea at the hands of the Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets. A late rally gave BW the win in game one, 3-1, prior to the hosts making quick work of CU in the nightcap, 11-2, in five innings.
GAME 1 - Capital 1, Baldwin Wallace 3
Through the first four innings of game one, both sets of pitchers and defenses came through to keep the scoreboard untouched. While host Baldwin Wallace put runners on in each of the first three innings, Cap twisted a 5-4-3 double play in the first to eliminate the threat and then stranded three more runners, one in scoring position with timely defense behind Brianna Reardon's effort in the circle.
After getting its first runner aboard in the third, Cap had its first scoring attempt stopped with a line out that ended in a double play when Hannah Martin was doubled up at third to end the inning.
In the fifth, Capital used an error in the field to lead to the game's first run being scored and a late lead acquired in the top of the fifth inning. Martin reached on the miscue by BW first baseman Mackenzie Milligan and after being moved to second courtesy of a sacrifice bunt by Lauren Kachure, scored from second base on junior Morgan Fadel's single to center.
The lead was short-lived when in the bottom of the sixth one swing of the bat changed the course of the game. After Baldwin Wallace put two runners on via a single and fielder's choice, Ashley Matousek hit a three-run home run to left center field to regain the lead, 3-1. Capital had the tying run at the plate but was unable to push across the runs necessary to keep the game alive.
GAME 2 - Capital 2, Baldwin Wallace 11 (F/5 inn.)
While Capital struck first with Kristen Mellot's run-scoring single in the team's first ups, the Crusaders would not plate another run until the fifth when it was too little, too late.
After Capital took a 1-0 lead, Baldwin Wallace scored three times in the second inning against Chevonne Hayslett (L, 4-10) with the aid of two walks, two doubles and a sacrifice fly out. The third was more devastating when the Yellow Jackets plated eight more runs to run away with the game.
While RBI singles by Krista Jennings and pinch hitter Hannah Perrine added two to the board, two base clearing hits accounted for the rest of the damage in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded, Alexis Boledovic hit a three-run double to the right center field gap to make the score 8-1.
Freshman Kim Rega relieved Hayslett but following a Capital error, BW's Macy Leach cranked a three-run home run to extend the Yellow Jacket's lead, 11-1. Rega kept the Yellow Jackets off the board from that point on.
Hannah Martin posted her second RBI base hit of the day in the top of the fourth to make it an 11-2 score, but the Crusaders drew no closer in the loss.
Capital (12-26, 4-12 OAC) will play its final two games of the season at home this Saturday when they host the University of Mount Union for games that will begin at 1 and 3 p.m. from Clowson Field. Cap will also celebrate Senior Day in between games to honor its three seniors: Brianna Reardon, Chevonne Hayslett, and Kristen Mellott.
