Capital Falls Short in Season Opener Against Denison

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital University Women's Basketball opened the 2019-20 season at home against Denison University out of the North Coast Athletic Conference on Tuesday night. The Crusaders lost to Denison, 84-77, at The Capital Center. 

After missing last season due to injury, senior Elli Wachtman (Upper Arlington, Ohio) came back to lead the Crusaders with 20 points. Senior Regan Stonerock (Circleville, Ohio) scored 10 points, while junior Caroline Taphorn and freshman Erika Linder each chipped in seven points. Stonerock and Wachtman lead the Purple and White with eight rebounds each.

Denison opened the game on a 6-0 run before Stonerock got Capital on the board with a jumper. The Big Red kept the lead throughout the quarter, but with 47 seconds left in the opening frame Capital narrowed down the deficit to one point with a layup made by freshman Maddy Reese (Navarre, Ohio). Denison finished the quarter with a 20-16 lead. 

The Crusaders had a strong second quarter, outscoring the Big Red by one. Stonerock put up six points with three layups. With 2:20 remaining, freshman Erika Linder (Prospect, Ohio) made a three-point jump shot and Stonerock added a layup to end the quarter, but Denison carried the 32-34 lead.  

Capital fell short in the third quarter allowing Denison to go up eight points. 

The Crusaders came out strong in the fourth after facing a deficit in the first three quarters. Capital opened the frame with a layup from Wachtman, followed by a jumper made by junior Caroline Taphorn (Harrison, Ohio). The Purple and White secured a 4-0 run straight out of the gate. With six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, sophomore Brooke Ommert (Wakeman, Ohio) made a jump shot, cutting the Denison lead to one possession. For the remainder of the match, Capital never fell more than seven points behind. Following a series of fouls made by both sides, the Crusaders fell to the Big Red, 84-77. 


The Crusaders head to University Heights, Ohio for the John Carroll University Classic on Friday, November 15. Capital will take on La Roche University at 6 p.m.
