Crusaders Fall 80-60 to Otterbein

WESTERVILLE, Ohio - The Capital University women's basketball team dropped an 80-60 decision to Otterbein University Saturday evening in its first conference matchup of the season. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 3-3 on the year while the Cardinals improve to 5-1.

Junior Carlie Hulette (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) paced Capital with 16 points, including three free throws, six field goals, and a three-pointer. Senior Cassidy Bosch (Logan, Ohio/Logan) was not far behind, scoring fifteen points for the Purple and White. Freshman Erika Linder (Prospect, Ohio/Pleasant) put up nine points, dished out six rebounds, and had one steal. 

Capital scored the first baskets of the game but Otterbein quickly took control, scoring six unanswered points. Capital came back to tie it up at six with two jumpers from sophomore Emma Burns (Westerville, Ohio/St. Francis Desales). The Cardinals went to outscore the Crusaders 15-8 in the first quarter. 

In the first minute of the second quarter, the Cardinals had a three-pointer and a layup to increase their lead. Hulette got the ball and put up back-to-back baskets in the eighth minute. Both teams took advantage of back and forth scoring opportunities for the remainder of the quarter. Capital put 16 points on the board in the second, shooting 66% from the free-throw line. Otterbein scored 24 points, leading by 15 at the half. 

Capital picked up the pace following the half, scoring 19 points. The Crusaders went on to score eight unanswered points with three minutes remaining in the quarter. Freshmen Natalie Galaida (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) and Linder put up back-to-back three-pointers in that run. Otterbein went to outscore Capital by six, continuing their lead into the fourth. 

The Crusaders made one final effort to take the lead in the last quarter, outscoring the Cardinals 17-16 but fell short in securing the victory. Capital went 6-8 at the free-throw line and sunk a single 3-point shot. Hulette scored seven points with a three-pointer, two free throws, and a jumper.
