PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Capital University women's soccer team was defeated by the nationally-ranked Tartans of Carnegie Mellon University in an overtime thriller, 3-2, Sunday afternoon. Monique Hanayik led the Crusaders with two goals.
Capital jumped out to an early lead in the 27th minute. Junior Monique Hanayik (Sidney, Ohio) scored on a goal in traffic. Sophomore Chloe Brown (Monclova, Ohio) recorded the assist.
In the 33rd minute, sophomore Mary Bushee (San Marcos, Calif.) placed a through ball well ahead of Hanayik and beat the defender to the ball then scored her second goal beating the keeper to the near post.
The Crusaders took a 2-0 lead to the half. The Capital defense was tough in the first half surrendering only three shots that were all saved by junior keeper Alexis Brand (Orlando, Fla.). Brand finished the match with 12 saves.
The seventh-ranked Tartans scored in the first minute of the second half, making the score 2-1 in Capital's favor. The Tartans struck again in the last minute to force the match to go to overtime. In overtime, Carnegie Mellon scored the golden goal in the 97th minute.
Capital (4-4-0) will open their Ohio Athletic Conference schedule against the University of Mount Union on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m.
