Leitch Leads Capital Over Hanover as Crusaders Advance

DANVILLE, Ky. – Capital University's women's soccer team faced Hanover College in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Hillside Field, located on the campus of Centre College.

Both goalkeepers held their own throughout the match but Capital's (15-4-1 overall) defender, Chloe Brown (Monclova, Ohio) scored the goal that gave the Crusaders the advantage. The goal came in the 12th minute when teammate Claire Quinn (Coto de Caza, Calif.) placed the ball inside the box before Brown chipped it in the bottom right corner past, Hanover's Morgan Cole.

Hanover (15-6 overall) turned up the intensity in the second half, presenting it with plenty of scoring of opportunities. Kim Leitch (Rocky River, Ohio) came up big for the Crusaders as the Panthers entered desperation mode.

Capital was faced with two corner kicks from the Panthers in the final minutes. Hanover's Jessie Cormorosky lined up for a corner kicks in the 85th minute before she placed the ball, right in the box. The kick set up her teammate for the game-tying kick, but Leitch dove to her left to get a hand on the shot, deflecting it out of bounds. The Panthers attempted another corner kick with 10 seconds left on the clock, resulting in a desperation shot from Leah Ellis that went wide right.

Becca Cartmill (Temecula, Calif.) led all players with five shots. Quinn added four shots of her own, two on goal, and an assist. After being even at the break with eight shots apiece, Capital dominated the shot category in the second half, outshooting the Panthers 18-6. The Crusaders also led the Panthers in shots on goal (9-8), and corner kicks (8-5).

The Crusaders will take on the Southern Athletic Association Champion Centre College (18-1-1) in the second round of the NCAA Tournament tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
