COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital University's women's soccer team suffered a narrow loss at the hands of DePauw University on Wednesday night.
After an uneventful start to the match, the Tigers scored the match's first goal off the foot of Shaili Kumar, who beat Capital's goalie to the left. Four minutes later, teammate Alex Berkley added to the lead with a goal of her own.
With ten minutes left in the half, senior forward Becca Cartmill (Temecula, Calif.) sent the ball on a high-arching path that landed behind the Tiger keeper and bounced into the net for Capital's first goal of the season.
After intermission, DePauw's Rebekah Crone scored her team's last goal of the match.
Following several scoring opportunities, Capital got on the board following a Tiger foul. Claire Quinn (Coto de Caza, Calif.) was awarded with a penalty kick. The senior midfielder placed the ball beyond the outstretched arms of Riley Riordan, who got a piece of the ball but not enough to keep it from finding its mark.
With 10 seconds left on the clock, freshman forward Jordan Fike (Powell, Ohio) received an inbound pass at midfield. The forward sped past the Tiger defense before taking her shot but the ball found the back of the net after the final second ticked off the clock.
Cartmill paced the Crusaders with a season high four shots.
As a team, Capital took 13 shots, four on goal. Both teams took four corner kicks while the Crusaders were assessed seven fouls, compared to DePauw's four.
The Purple and White will return to the field with a home match with Wittenberg University on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 1:00 p.m.
