Stifling Defense Shuts Out Marietta

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital University women's soccer team earned its fourth conference victory on Tuesday evening against Marietta College. Capital jumped on top of the Pioneers early and maintained control throughout the match.

The Crusaders (7-6-1 overall, 4-1-1 OAC) got its first goal of the match on a free kick from Claire Quinn (Coto de Caza, Calif.). The goal marked the third straight match that Quinn has converted a free kick into a Capital goal.

The Purple and White took complete control, beginning in the 22nd minute as Mary Bushee (San Marcos, Calif.) scored her first goal on the season after receiving a feed from Caroline Hester (Milford, Ohio). Five minutes later, Becca Cartmill (Temecula, Calif.) took advantage of a Marietta (7-5-4, 1-2-3) miscue in which the Pioneer defender lost her footing after the ball deflected off her foot, right to Cartmill. The mistake was compounded when the Marietta goalkeeper misplayed the ball, leaving the net open for Cartmill to tap it in.

Capital's stifling defense held the Pioneers to just three shots in the second half to ensure the victory.

The Crusaders were on the mark the whole match with three goals and five shots on goals on just nine attempts.

Three goalies saw playing time for Capital but it was Hannah Klotzsche (Avon, Ind.) who received the win. The win improved her goalkeeper record to 7-6-1 on the season.

Capital returns to the field when it will honor its senior class for Senior Day on Saturday against John Carroll University (6-4-6, 3-1-2). The match has a 2 p.m. start time.
