COUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University volleyball team took to the hardwood at The Cap Center on Tuesday night. The visiting Muskingum University Muskies came from behind to defeat Capital, 3-1 (25-27, 25-16, 25-22, 25-22).
Capital (5-17, 1-3 OAC) gained an early advantage in a hard-fought bout in the first set, 27-25. Muskingum actually found itself down four points, 21-17, but battled back to tie the game at 24 with a block by Katie Hunt and Mackenzie O'Shea. Capital returned the favor to win the set when Kristin Bender and Kirsten Nickles joined forces to block down the game-winning point.
Muskingum came out in the second set and went on a 6-2 run to start the game. The advantage dwindled to no fewer than three points at any time, but the Muskies eventually broke away for a nine-point victory.
Set number three featured a large run by Capital to close a gap that at one time was six points. Freshman Akaila Howard (Huber Heights, Ohio) aided in that effort, leading a run of seven points to overtake the set, 21-19. During that run, Howard tallied three aces but the momentum quickly shifted back to the Muskies when they went on a 6-1 run to end the set in their favor and take a 2-1 lead.
Neither team truly gained an advantage in the fourth and final set until separated by one point late, Musky went on a five-point run to break the set open for good.
Senior Courtney McCracken (Newark, Ohio/Newark Catholic) led the team in attacks (41), kills (12) and digs (15). She now has 11 double-doubles on the season.
Joining McCracken in the double-double club was freshman Kirstin Jutte (Fort Recovery, Ohio), who put together a 29-assist and 10-dig night. This marks Jutte's third of the season and second in her last three matches.
On the other side of the net, Chloe Brandewie posted a team-high 11 kills and hit .250, while teammate Mackenzie O'Shea joined her in double figures (10). Deidre Prince led both sides with 27 digs.
Capital now hits the road again and head for the University of Mount Union. They will take on the Purple Raiders this Saturday, Oct. 15, at 1 p.m.
