OLIVET, Mich. – The Capital University men's lacrosse team streaked past the Comets of Olivet College (Mich.), 12-5, at the Cutler Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon. A hot streak late in the game and six Brennan O'Callaghan goals led Capital to its sixth win of the season.
Olivet (1-5) marked up the scoreboard first, but Capital (6-2) immediately came back to score five straight goals over a 16-minute timespan. Freshman Ryan Rampi (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) scored one of two man-up goals for Capital during that time, the other coming from sophomore Brennan O'Callaghan (West Chester, Ohio).
Up 5-1, Olivet's Nick Minaudo and Tyler Polendo score in succession, marking the first of two occasions the Comets trimmed the gap to just two goals. Logan Krieger took advantage on a man-up situation to open the third quarter and made the score 7-5, however Capital turned them away with another run of five goals to end the game on. Four of O'Callaghan's six goals came during that stretch, which began with 4:30 to go in the third quarter.
The defense once again came to play, especially in the second half. Olivet was held to just eight and had six of its attempt to clear the ball upfield thwarted shots in the second half. Freshman Christian Crossingham (Sandpoint, Idaho) got back in a groove, taking 16-of-20 faceoff opportunities. Sophomore goalkeeper Cole Palmby (Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy) made six saves on 11 tries.
Junior Brent Walton (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) had a solid night for point-getting, scoring once four assists. He also picked up a pair of ground balls.
Capital will host Calvin College (Mich.) on Saturday, March 26 at 1 p.m. in its next set action.
